Healthcare Technology Innovation Centre (HTIC), a multidisciplinary research and development (R&D) center, is a joint initiative of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, that brings together technologists, engineers, doctors and healthcare professionals, industry, and government to develop healthcare technologies for the country.  HTIC’s vision is to develop technologies that create impact and drive innovation in healthcare and to be a leader known for technical excellence and collaborative spirit.


HTIC collaborates with leading medical institutions and a wide range of industry players in various areas such as ophthalmology, ultrasonography, orthopedics, neonatal care, and patient monitoring to develop and deploy healthcare technologies.

In addition to technology R&D, HTIC works closely with industry in development of R&D solutions, joint development of technology products, and technology assessment and evaluation.

HTIC also works to develop human resources in healthcare technology in the country through various channels including innovation fellowships and IITM students and interns.

HTIC’s mission combines technology R&D, industry services, capacity building, and ecosystems. The technology R&D work includes programs for a mobile surgical eye unit, Eye-PAC & Forus, and ARTSENS. Industry services work focuses on R&D solutions, joint product development, and technological assessment. HTIC work on capacity building focuses on innovation fellowships and industry training. The ecosystem work unites all collaborative partners and works toward a collaborative network, demand creation and advocacy, and enabling policy making.
