Abstract
The International Multiple Sclerosis Genetics Consortium (IMSGC) was formed in 2003 with funding from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and published results from the first genome-wide association study (GWAS) in 2007 that identified the second and third susceptibility genes known to predispose people to developing multiple sclerosis (MS). IMSGC later expanded to include more research groups from more countries, receiving grants to conduct larger GWAS studies.
Mission
By bringing together dedicated researchers from 15 different countries, IMSGC has used GWASs to identify more than 100 genetic variations influencing the risk of developing MS. The team proposes to leverage the compiled deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) samples from 50,000 people with MS to compare gene profiles among 1,000 people with the most severe course against 1,000 people with the most benign course. The collection and collation of these samples should provide the first resource with sufficient power to identify gene variants that influence progression in MS.
